Why would a college student want to volunteer for an overnight fundraiser event for AmericanCancerSociety?

Relay for Life is an overnight team fundraising event to cure cancer and provided services to cancer patients. Some college students in our area said “there was nothing in it for them”. Do you have any suggestions of what would make a college student interested in participating in such an event?

Unfortunately not all people are interested in certain types of volunteering. There really is not that much you can do to interest them if they do not want to help out. I would say just try to get them interested in helping out and showing that it can be fun and rewarding.

Obviously those who make those comments are self absorbed beyond all redemption…well almost all redemption. Remind them that cancer could strike them or someone they love and perhaps they might rethink their position? Or, you could offer a large pizza to the biggest fund raiser? Pizza was always a winner when I went to school!

Do they realize that one of them will most certainly have cancer in their life time, I mean the odds are pretty high. Obviously some people are never going to care about others until life slams them on the ground but some can be motivated by just maybe meeting someone who has cancer or survived it, that should do it.

How about as a gesture of thanks for their own robust health!
Explain to them that in the real world its not about them and what’s in it for them. Its about US and how WE CAN MAKE THIS WORLD BETTER. It’s about doing some things to prevent this world from going down the tubes, morally, physically, environmentally, spiritually.
I know I’m ranting, but their selfishness makes me want to verbally smack all of them!!!
The truth is they won’t be interested in it until they do it and experience an awakening. My daughter’s Psych. 101 class had a requirement of 40 hours of community service as part of the course work for the class. When my daughter spent her 40 hours volunteering at Camp Summit - a sleep away camp for people from 6 to 60 with various disabilities. She discovered she liked it very much. She worked for the camp for 4 summers and through her example my younger teen got interested and she volunteered/worked for them 4 summers also. Some times doing it is what’s in it for them. They just have to be prodded into trying something outside of their selfish little world.
