Is it weird to attend a college with a different religious affiliation than my own?

whosit? asked:
I want to go to a college without any religious affiliation, but some of the colleges I am looking at are affiliated with a different religion. What does this mean? Are most students there going to be of that religion? Will that impact me if I do apply/attend that school?

While most religious schools don’t require you to be the same religion to attend, they may give admissions priority to students of that religion, you may be expected to attend services, follow dietary restrictions, obey seemingly-random rules, and have to put up with religion invading all subjects, even where it certainly does not belong.
You don’t have to go to a religious school just because you’re religious. Most people don’t. There are plenty of religions represented at secular schools, and plenty of people with no religion.

no it isnt weird. i think it just means youre open to all things religion. God did not tell us that we should not learn about other religions or try to see what others are all about, he said to worship only Him. Not how. Go for it. have fun and enjoy college.

I go to a Roman Catholic university and only about 30% of the students are Catholic. We have a bit more of a comprehensive education; we have to take an ethics course, and three religion/philosophy courses as part of our core requirements. The religion classes don’t have to be Catholic though, you can opt for Eastern religions, Christian marriage, etc. There are some religious statues on campus and there is a big [optional] celebration mass at the beginning of the year.
It really isn’t that big of a deal to go to a school with a different religious affiliation. If anything, it is helpful to get a different perspective.
Good luck with whatever you choose! :]

You don’t need to be catholic to go to Norte Dame University in IN. You wouldn’t feel uncomfortable going there even if your weren’t a Christian. There are many colleges that have started or have roots in one religion but now it doesn’t effect the general population of the students.
If you still concerned, just call up the admissions office and express your concerns.

no, a lot of students choose colleges based on their academic programs and city, not religious affiliation, although some do. it should impact you if you choose to attend that school because other kids won’t be that religion either.
