My best advice would be to avoid trade schools that offer a promising career in this field. Most of the technical course work can be learned through self-study and a little advice. It would be best to invest in equipment rather than tuition and training because most of photographer’s work depends solely on the quality and creativity of the work. To do this, one you have equipment, like a really nice digital SLR camera, you can share your work with professionals very easily by using websites, like smugmug.com or shutterfly.com. On websites like these and others, you can build your portfolio or pictures. Try capturing pictures at various angles and using various lenses and light variations.
If you don’t like this avenue, you can always go to a local community college to take some basic courses on digital photography to help you get started. There might be workshops in your local community that offer courses in digital photography or SLR classes as well.
See if you work gets your foot in the door at various professional media organizations and go from there!
